Black Earth Workshop and Publication

The Moving Arts Collective worked with Zakiya Mckenzie from the tiata fahodzi theatre company who facilitated a climate justice workshop in Jersey.

The workshop took place in December 2023 at Jersey Museum and invited participants from diverse backgrounds to represent the richness of Jersey’s cultural and social fabric. It engaged with questions concerning racial and environmental equality, led by creativity and art that enabled different ways of responding. Participants took part in an active discussion led by Zakiya and each sharing their unique perspectives and experiences. The workshop was captured through poems created by participants and by artist Kiera Melville who  sketched live illustrations on the day.

This workshop is part of the tiata fahodzi theatre company and Watershed project Black Earth: Resistance, Anti-Racism and the Environment which aims to explore and understand how the climate crisis impacts Black and Global Majority people and how creative resistance can play a part in the way we respond. The workshop in Jersey builds on the existing will for change amongst underrepresented communities when it comes to the climate emergency, while acknowledging the systemic racism that has historically denied them a platform in the cultural sector.

The Moving Arts Collective and Zakiya Mckenzie are currently working together to create a publication to reflect on the creative responses and findings from the workshop.

This Project is funded by The Jersey Community Foundation and with support in kind from Jersey Heritage.
